One Last Midnight (Requiem Dark #2.5) by Claire Winn

On a backdrop of book pages, an iPad with the cover of One Last Midnight (Requiem Dark #2.5) by Claire Winn. In the bottom right corner of the image, a strip of torn paper with a quote: "One Last Midnight is a quick read that should make your adrenaline spike." and a URL: judeinthestars.com.

I was very excited to read this novella because Morphett and Kaya both deserved more time on page. They get it here, in two loosely related parts, one for each, taking place during Requiem’s Independence Festival and around Asa’s eighteenth birthday.

One of the things that has bothered me in this series from the beginning is how young the characters are, even though they’ve already gone through so much. I appreciate that, in this book, it’s acknowledged. Having so many responsibilities at eighteen is not normal and neither is it common. In the second part especially, Asa’s young age is mentioned repeatedly. Which could be annoying but isn’t, as it comes from her slightly older sister worrying about her. So not only does it work but it also helps the characters’ youth make more sense.

In the first part (Slade), Morphett is purging the universe of the people who enhanced her as a child. She needs help and grudgingly enlists Riven on her mission. Morphett is a super badass character and in this story, while her irreverence and snark can’t hide the pain of what she’s been subjected to, the way she reclaims her ordeals and makes them her own is glorious.

In part two (Ink), Kaya feels her connection to her sister slipping through her fingers now that Asa has become a Matriarch. She also feels unnecessary, until the past springs back up and she jumps on the opportunity to do something for her sister.

As in City of Shattered Light and City of Vicious Night, the pace is fast and breathless. One Last Midnight is a quick read that should make your adrenaline spike.

Just so you know, though, the MCs aren’t sapphic, but if, like me, you enjoyed the previous books, you’ll like this one too.
