This will be a very short but very enthusiastic review. Everything I loved when I read this book in May, I loved even more in audio. Quinn Riley is quickly becoming one of my favourite narrators, she brings nuance and depth, and I can’t wait to hear her in future sapphic audiobooks. I feel very fortunate to have met her at the GCLS conference in Denver, because she’s lovely but also because she’s really invested in the books she narrates and is hoping to do more sapphic fiction too. I am especially looking forward to her narration of Purposefully Accidental by G Benson, announced for September.
Coming back to Stars Collide, I loved experiencing Eden and Anna again, and in a different way. Eden’s journey felt even more poignant and I enjoyed going through it with her – and Anna – a lot. Either thanks to the narration or maybe because I knew the characters already, the instalove feeling wasn’t as strong as on my first reading. It all felt very natural, logical. I love both Anna and Eden so much (and their entourage as well) that I wanted to shield them from anything that could go wrong. There’s one scene in which a good idea could have misfired badly (I’m trying not to spoil and it’s not easy!), which had even more tension in audio. To me, it’s a pivotal moment in the relationship, in the way it allows the characters’ trust to settle, trust in each other, trust in their love being strong enough to carry them through chaos, trust in each other’s ability to communicate and fix potential mistakes.
This review isn’t as short as I thought it would be, after all. TL;DR: the story is sweet, the characters are endearing, and the narration is excellent. 4.5⭐️
